Road to 31 Devotion - Day 29 - Are you a Firefly?

Listen to “FireFly” off of my new mixtape https://soundcloud.com/jeannie-ortega-2/firefly…

You ever watch a Firefly in the summertime? During the day, you can’t tell it lights up because the sun is so overbearing it just blends in but at night you see it in all its glory. I remember looking at those bugs as a glimmer of hope in the darkness surrounding it. They always made me happy knowing that they weren’t like the other bugs, they had this superpower to light up and stand out.

When I committed my life fully to Jesus, I quickly realized how lonely this walk could be since everyone else was so easily drawn to the dark and overcome by it. Every day I felt like I had to choose to do what I knew was right in God, despite what everyone else was doing. Eventually, I made up my mind that shining in the dark doesn't have to be something that alienates me. It’s what God wants us to do.

Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

John 8:12 “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

I accepted the fact that if I wanted to see different results, that meant I had to step into what God called me to– regardless of how unpopular or weird it was to anyone else. I was gonna let my light shine and I did.

When God saw that I was unashamed to be a light in the dark world, He sent others my way that were like me. I learned that just like in science a little bit of light can illuminate an entire region of darkness. I was no longer going to let things influence me but in God, I would be an influence to every darkness I came in contact with, hoping to spark a little fire in them.

1 Peter 2:9 “You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”

Act 13:47 “For so the Lord has charged us, saying, I have set you to be a light for the Gentiles (the unbelievers), that you may bring [eternal] salvation to the uttermost parts of the earth.

Reflection: Are you constantly surrounded by darkness (Sin, Depression, Temptation)? Do you find yourself being overcome by it? Jesus assures us that He overcame the world by His death burial and resurrection. I challenge you today to get in the word and discover who you are in God so that you can walk in the light, put it on and shine the love, hope, and joy of Jesus in a dark world.
