Brace yourself, what I’m about to say will be rough but you need to hear the truth if you expect to get through. When you start to do what God wants in your life, expect for all hell to break loose. Yeah, hell is still one of those words I use because sometimes that’s the only way to really explain what you're up against. I wrote my song “Tear Us Apart” after I realized that God had sent me my life partner, my husband, a great thing, and the enemy was determined to tear us part because he knew that we were a threat to his kingdom. While you are on your spiritual journey, God will send people to walk alongside you, whether it be a spouse (like in my case), friends, family or church family. We were made for community and sometimes it’s our community that helps us in life’s biggest battles – Whether through prayer, listening or giving godly counsel. Unfortunately, because we are all human and wrapped in flesh the enemy tries to use it against us.
For me, it was some family and people in the church that tried to break up my hubby and I when we first came together. God places people in your life and it’s important you know that God sent them because you better believe the devil will use haters to sow discord and tear apart godly friendships and unions. For us, we both separately heard from God about the role we would play in each other's life, we also had prayed and we knew we would add to each other's life in a great way, encouraging each other to be the best we could be as children of God. That’s what to look for in divine connections so we knew this was heaven made.
Mark 10:9
“What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”
Now, when it comes to godly friendships and relationships, another thing to look out for is your own fears and insecurities coming to destroy these unions. I know for me every time God sent a mentor or friend my way that I knew would add to my walk and growth, something would always try and stop that. Truthfully, sometimes it was my own silly thoughts - ‘They don’t really care about me, maybe I’m bothering them, or they’re not answering my text so they don’t care…’ That would be my own fear of rejection coming to separate and 9 out of 10 times it was a lie. In those cases, I would pick up the Bible and read God’s truth to fight away those vain imaginations. We can’t find our self-value in friendships/relationships anyway, so when insecurity creeps in, make sure you strengthen yourself in the Lord to be able to silence those lies.
Romans 16:17
“I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them.”
2 Corinthians 10:5
Pray this - “I destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.”
1 Corinthians 1:10
“I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.”
Reflection: When God sends godly community your way, do you allow the lies of others or your own negativity, divide you from those people? If so pray against any spirit that is trying to cause division, pray for your friend instead of entertaining lies and the Holy Spirit will melt away any discord.
