Listen to "Who Says" off of my new mixtapehttps://m.soundcloud.com/jeannie-ortega-2/who-says
I wrote this song in the middle of my pop career, sort of in rebellion to the systems of stardom and normal teenage/young-adult life. I never felt like I fit in so I made it ok to stand out or be different. Not sure if it was because of some of the things I witnessed growing up but I was never into alcohol or drugs, and besides trying a few things here and there I never wanted to become an addict of anything. The control freak in me wouldn't allow for anything otherwise. And sure I enjoy dancing (I'm Latina, God added just a bit of spice when making us hehe) but my idea of a good party was never getting treated like a piece of merchandise at a club.
As I began to fall in love with Jesus, I identified with how much of an outcast He was. Unwilling to conform to the system of religion but instead showing people The Way to true freedom and living out the purpose the Father in Heaven had for them. His revolutionary example spoke to the worldchanger in me. It brought clarity to my peculiarity and embraced me just the way I am.
As I grew to fall deeper in love with this Jesus, I strived to know more about Him. As I learned more, I began to develop in character and I learned how to focus my unruly ways . I realized I wasn't a weirdo I was an individual, called by God and equipped with the right amount of crazy to break out of the boxes of conformity.
Romans 12:2
"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect"
Now, as a full on believer who took my own personal journey with God and the Bible and discovered the life it had inside to reconcile all of the things I was not secure about, I unfortunately see those same boxes still exist in the church. However, just like I did then, I do now. Never did I fit into a box and although it's been amazing to experience church culture I see where the four walls of institutionalized Christianity is missing out on what our fearless leader Jesus called us to.
Matthew 28:19 -20
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
Reflection: Just because it's good, doesnt mean it's God and just because it's the majority doesnt mean it's your opinion too. Do not be afraid to challenge the norm. Ask yourselves the questions - why do I do this? Who says I have to?
Seek God today for the areas in your life that you've allowed to just go with the flow and challenge yourself to step into your purpose regardless how different that might look. If you are ever having trouble finding the courage to be different, remember who God says you are - Royal, Holy, Called out. (1 Peter 2:9)
1 John 4:1
"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world."
1 Peter 2:9 "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light"
